With a fantastic climate, gorgeous coastline, rich history and diverse collection of cultures, it’s no wonder we’re drawn to the shores of the Med.Bordered by Europe, Africa and Asia, this “sea in the middle of the land” has a coastline stretching 28000 miles and attracts a staggering one third of the world’s international tourists. But there’s more to the Med than holidays – This is also a place people love to call home.

In this new series, architectural designer Charlie Luxton travels from Spain in the west to Greece in the east, exploring this diverse region’s fascinating architecture. He gets hands on to experience life as a local and of course meets the lucky people with truly amazing Homes by the Med…


EPISODES | Season 1

Episode 1: COSTA BRAVA

Charlie Luxton takes the coastal property showcase to the sun-kissed beaches of the Mediterranean. He begins on the rugged coastline of Costa Brava in Catalonia, Spain, where he visits a surreal, abstract home made up of 10 interlocking cubes of white render and reinforced glass. He also takes in a contemporary home built using stone local to a medieval walled town. In Begur, Charlie learns how to make a tasty Catalan version of paella, and in Tamariu, he visits a house with two swimming pools cut into a cliff.

Episode 2: COTE D’AZUR

Charlie Luxton's property showcase arrives on the Côte d'Azur in France, as the latest leg of his Mediterranean tour gets under way in St Tropez. In Les Issambres, he visits a contemporary minimalist house, and in Villefranche-sur-Mer, he stops at a renovated 1960s villa overlooking Cap Ferrat. The foothills of the Alpes-Maritimes play host to Bridget Bardot's former home, and a trip to Grasse - `the perfume capital of the world' - brings him to a farmhouse once occupied by an order of perfume-making monks.

Episode 3:  MALLORCA

In Mallorca, Charlie Luxton travels to the cliffs near Port Adriano and a home carved in the rocks. He also visits a once run-down villa that has been turned into a holiday retreat, and the opulent Villa Colani. His final stop this week is to VIlla Kerida, which boasts 360-degree views, and private access directly to the sea.

Episode 4: CRETE

Charlie Luxton heads to the island of Crete, and visits a sprawling palace of glass, metal and rock west of Chania, featuring a guest block that seems to float above the sea. He also visits a tiny mobile home in an olive grove in the south of the island.

Episode 5: COSTA DEL SOL

Charlie Luxton returns to Spain to explore the Costa del Sol, one of the most-visited sections of the Andalucian coastline. While there, he meets a couple who have built an extraordinary modern home that is designed like a cruise ship, but on dry land.

Episode 6: PUGLIA

Charlie Luxton travels to Puglia, Italy, and in the seaside town of Polignano a Mare, he visits a townhouse perched precariously over sea caverns. He also takes in a rural building in Alberbello with an unusual conical roof.

Episode 1: IBIZA

Charlie explores Ibiza. He visits a mansion built of bamboo and concrete and a classic Ibizan farmhouse. There's also Ibiza's answer to Stonehenge and a yoga retreat in a refurbished villa.

Episode 2: CROATIA

Architectural designer Charlie Luxton explores Croatia and its stunning Dalmatian coast and islands. He visits a gleaming white property that cascades down the side of a cliff on the island of Brac. In the town of Postira there's a refurbished fisherman's cottage. On Vis, Charlie visits a beach rated as one of the finest in Europe and an elegant palazzo built by the Venetians in the 16th century. There's also a Roman ruin in Split.

Episode 3:  MALLORCA

Charlie explores some fabulous island homes, including a harbour-front house with an amazing glass floor. He discovers an Arab bath house that is over 1,000 years old in Palma's old town.


Near Positano, on Italy's Amalfi coast, Charlie Luxton visits a fifties hillside villa that is a vision of modernity and examines a restored 17th-century house near Praiano. He visits a palace and a spectacular auditorium on Italy's amazing Amalfi Coast. He also makes some limoncello.

Episode 5: MALTA

Charlie heads to Malta, where he meets a couple of serial property-buyers from Ireland, and a financial consultant who has built a gargantuan modern mansion with a multi-level roof terrace cut into a limestone cliff, one that resembles the deck of a cruise liner.


Charlie explores the lesser-known side of the Costa Blanca, arriving at Moraira on one of the handful of fishing boats that operate out of the port. He discovers a fab farmhouse rescued by Essex couple Lee and Kerry, who's rural retreat is like an organic extension of the landscape.
